Obituary

Dorothy Jean Newton, 79, of Oshkosh, NE died Saturday, June 1, 2019 at the Great Plains Health Hospital in North Platte, NE.

Dorothy was born on July 31, 1939 in her family farmhouse on the South Table in rural Oshkosh, Nebraska, the daughter of Virgil A. and Ada L. (Melius) Younglund. She was a 1957 graduate of Garden County High School in Oshkosh, NE, and later moved to Lincoln, NE to attend Beauty School. She married the love of her life, Lawrence E. Newton on March 7, 1959 in Lincoln, NE. In 1964 the couple made their home in Independence, IA, where Dorothy worked for several years as a cook at the Mental Health Institute. Lawrence died in 1969. In 1984 she moved to Larned, KS to be with her daughter and grandchildren. She moved back to Oshkosh, NE in 1994 to take care of her Stepfather Richard Quelle.

She enjoyed staying busy and was a skilled baker, baking wedding cakes, making jellies, and canning food for family and friends. She was active member of the Oshkosh community, and volunteered with the local museums, the senior center, and with the Raptor Release Organization. Her family history had always been important to her, and she had tracked her family genealogy back to the mid 1600’s. Out of all her many interests the thing she loved the most was her family.

Dorothy is survived by her children; Anthony (Rosemary) Newton, Boston, MA, Janine (Robert) Ruiz, Wichita, KS, and Richard (Debbi) Newton, Independence, IA, her grandchildren; Maria Matney, Kiel (Brandy) Ruiz, Derek (Meghan) Newton, and Danielle (Jesse) Manning, her great grandchildren; Breanna, Marissa and Alicia Matney, Aubrey, Lily Ruiz, and Cecila Morris, Claire and Greyson Manning, and Evelyn Newton, and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Virgil Younglund and Richard and Ada Quelle, her husband Lawrence Newton, a grandson, Robert Francis Ruiz, a brother Dallas Younglund, and her sister Sharon White..

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday June 8, 2018 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, IA, with Rev. David Beckman presiding. Burial will be held at a later date. Visitation will be held from 5 PM until 7 PM on Friday June 7, 2019 at the Reiff Family Center in Independence, IA. A Rosary will be said at 4:45 PM and a Parish Vigil service will be held at 7 PM on Friday at the Reiff Family Center.
