Obituary

Alice Marie Mishler, 84, of Independence, IA died Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at the ABCM Rehabilitation Center – West Campus in Independence, IA.

Alice was born on April 17, 1935 in Independence, IA, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Toale) Koeppel. She attended St. John’s Catholic School in Independence and graduated in 1952. On November 17, 1955 she received a degree in nursing from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Dubuque, IA. She married LeRoy Mishler on April 14, 1956 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, IA. In 1957 they made their home in Lansing, MI for one year before they returned to Independence. Alice worked for many years as a nurse at Peoples Memorial Hospital and Medical Associates in Independence, IA. In 1987 she moved to Waterloo, IA where she worked at Covenant Medical Center. Alice completed her 42 years in nursing at Northeast Iowa Family Practice in Waterloo, IA. Following retirement she volunteered at Covenant Medical Center. In 2014 she moved back to Independence to be closer to her lifelong friends.

Affectionately referred to as, “Big Al,” she was known as a strong, independent woman who could be counted on to take charge of her four boys and their multiple friends occupying her house on a daily basis. Her extended family looked to her for guidance and support throughout the years. She took great pride in her nursing occupation and compassionately cared for others throughout her life. Alice loved animals and enjoyed the company of her pets. She was most proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren; keeping in touch with their lives from distances away.

Alice is survived by her children; Kent (Kathy) Mishler, Big Lake, MN, Mike Mishler, Vivian, SD, Cody (Beth) Mishler, Soldotna, AK, and Jeff Mishler, Anchor Point, AK, eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary Koeppel, and her four brothers; Joseph, Peter, Donald and Dale Koeppel.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday July 30, 2019, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Winthrop, IA, with Msgr. Thomas Toale officiating and Rev. David Beckman concelebrating. Burial will be held at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 PM until 7 PM with a Rosary at 4 PM and a Parish Vigil Service held at 7 PM on Monday July 29, 2019 at the Reiff Family Center in Independence, IA.

In 1968 or so I sat in an examining room at Medical Associates waiting for what mom said would be a couple of quick shots so I wouldn’t get sick. At age 5 it didn’t sound bad but when nurse Alice pulled the needle out and I was told to lower my drawers, things went down hill from there. After the tears stopped and I got my self respect back I had a new view on health care. In my teenage years Alice and family lived just a few homes down from my family. One of the boys drove the coolest green Camero and I can still hear the motor. I will have great memories of that time and Alice will always be my favorite nurse. I wish the family wonderful memories too. Gods blessings to all. Craig Johnson

I can still hear Dr Mochal calling for Alice for help at the doctors office. She was a remarkable nurse! Whenever we had to go to the doctor's office, we always hoped we would have Alice for our nurse. She was truly loved by so many! Our sympathy to her family.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Alice. Hanging out at the Mishler's house was some of the best times of my childhood. "Big Al" definitively always took charge. She was a tremendous person and always took great care of us kids. She will be missed.
